Understanding Your Check Engine Light

Is your check engine light on? Do you know what it means? To understand the check engine light (CEL), you first must understand your on-board diagnostics system (OBD-II). Since 1996, every vehicle manufactured in the United States has incorporated the OBD-II system. It features a network of sensors throughout your vehicle that monitors major systems for proper function, such as the engine and exhaust system. If the OBD-II system detects a problem or malfunction, your vehicle will trigger the check engine light in your dashboard and generate the appropriate diagnostic trouble code (DTC). This code is stored in the computer system and can only be retrieved using code-scanning technology. If a serious issue is detected, the check engine light may flash instead to alert you. We don’t recommend continuing to drive, as the problem can do more harm than good. At Knox Horizon Complete Auto Care in Knoxville, Tennessee, we have the proper tools and experience to perform check engine light diagnostics.
